What are the Side Effects of Testosterone Replacement Therapy?
The goal of treatment is to bring testosterone levels back to normal; therefore, few negative symptoms should occur. This therapy should not be used to produce testosterone levels above the normal range in men. Some possible side effects:
- Infertility—testosterone treatment can lessen or stop sperm production
- Changes in mood
- Increased aggressive behaviour
- Skin irritation with patches
- Gel can be transferred to a partner or child via skin to skin contact. Avoid this by thoroughly washing hands after applying the gel, and covering the application area with clothing
- Can worsen sleep apnea
- Can cause excess red blood cell production
Testosterone Replacement Therapy and Prostate Cancer
There is no conclusive evidence showing that TRT increases the risk of developing prostate cancer or accelerating the growth of small prostate cancers. However, there is evidence showing that testosterone can promote the growth and side effects of more advanced prostate cancers. Some men who have been successfully treated for prostate cancer are now being given testosterone (if indicated) by their physician. However, men with active/advanced prostate cancer should not be treated with testosterone replacement therapy. Talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have about prostate cancer and TRT.
