Men's Health Initiative of BC
Welcome to Aboutmen.ca, the website of the Men’s Health Initiative of British Columbia (MHIBC). We created this website as a one-stop resource for men to explore important health issues and hear from a variety of experts. This site has been developed by passionate people with one thing in common: we’re men, and we’re committed to men’s health.
Diabetes in Canada
Diabetes rates in British Columbia have more than doubled in the last decade. In fact, someone is diagnosed with diabetes every 20 minutes in BC. These statistics are reflected Canada-wide. Currently about 2.5 million Canadians have diabetes and these rates are expected to climb by an additional 3.7 million over the next 10 years. By 2020, 1 in 10 Canadians will have diabetes.
There are two types of diabetes:
- Type 1 diabetes affects approximately 10% of people with diabetes – its cause is unknown and it is usually diagnosed in children and teens.

Improving Men’s Health: A New Report
Men’s Health is a powerful way to look at healthcare that has become increasingly important in healthcare planning over the last 10 years. The men’s health perspective focuses on understanding men’s unique health needs, delivering services that are appropriate and accessible to men, and evaluating new strategies for improving men’s health. In order to show how this perspective can change the way we look at healthcare in British Columbia, the Men’s Health Institute of BC, in partnership with the SFU Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health & Addiction, has completed a report entitled Improving Men’s Health. This report clearly explains the men’s health perspective and applies it to health conditions especially relevant to men. This report will be available from the Men’s Health Institute website in January 2010.
