Welcome to Aboutmen.ca, the website of the Men’s Health Initiative of British Columbia (MHIBC). March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Feature Article - Colorectal Cancer
All about colorectal cancer: risk factors, symptoms & screening information - who, what, where, when, why.
Most colorectal cancers start as non-cancerous growths in the lining of the colon – these are called adenomatous polyps. Over time these polyps become larger and more can develop. Eventually some of the cells in the polyps may become cancerous. For that reason it’s important to know if you have polyps, and to remove them before cancer develops. Approximately 20% of patients 50 years old without a family history of colorectal cancer or any symptoms will have a polyp detected at screening.
Remember colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable. Screening is recommended for those aged 50 and over; younger for those at high risk.

Improving Men’s Health: A New Report
Men’s Health is a powerful way to look at healthcare that has become increasingly important in healthcare planning over the last 10 years. The men’s health perspective focuses on understanding men’s unique health needs, delivering services that are appropriate and accessible to men, and evaluating new strategies for improving men’s health. In order to show how this perspective can change the way we look at healthcare in British Columbia, the Men’s Health Institute of BC, in partnership with the SFU Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health & Addiction, has completed a report entitled Improving Men’s Health. This report clearly explains the men’s health perspective and applies it to health conditions especially relevant to men. This report will be available from the Men’s Health Institute website in January 2010.
